Toe Fusion

A toe fusion procedure is performed to provide relief to patients who are experiencing arthritis in their toes. For those specifically suffering from hallux rigidus, or rigid toe, we can fuse the metatarsophalangeal, or MTP joint. Often performed in the big toe, surgeons will remove the bones and joints that are damaged and replace them with a screw and plate during this procedure. Postoperative, patients are advised to avoid putting weight on the treated leg, keep their feet raised, and see a physiotherapist who will help with exercises.

Bunion Treatment

People who suffer from foot bunions have a big toe that points towards the other toes and an extrusion at the base of the toe. If special shoes, medication, and other methods aren’t successful, your doctor might recommend a bunion surgery. This surgery involves removing ligaments from the joint to realign the toe. In some cases, additional bone may need to be removed, or wires may be inserted to ensure proper healing. Many patients can walk on their foot shortly after the surgery, but a full recovery takes a month on average. To ensure the best results, we recommend our patients wear special shoes during this recovery period.

Hammertoe Surgery

If you have a hammertoe, one that’s middle section bends upwards, we can perform a tendon transfer procedure to create a straighter joint; we can also perform a joint resection, where tendons and ligaments are cut, and a piece of bone is removed. In the case of a joint resection, pins are utilized to set the toe and removed 3-4 weeks after the surgery. After the procedure, special shoes are recommended, and you will be instructed to elevate your foot, keep it dry, and perform a variety of exercises.
